Visual Communication-- Assignment Image

In this assignment, I am working on image type. In last assignment, I worked on typography to convey the message through text and this assignment deals with photographic image. I have used different tools which I had never used before. To extract all the images from its background, I used the Magic Wand tool and click on the background scene and delete to each selection. I also used Magnetic Lasso tool in one of my image instead of pervious tool. It doesn’t make any difference. So, for all images I used the transparent background layout. Each image is having dimension of 800×600 pixels and RGB colour mode at 72 ppi. I used
7th version of Photoshop for my typography images.

Anger

I have designed this image in such a way that the image is showing strongest vibratory effect and also represents a firery temper and impulsive personality. I was also thinking of creating a wave explosion effect. This image shows that person has lost his temper and the anger can be harmful to others. This image shows the aggressive anger by pointing the finger saying how could he harm and take the shape of attack. In this image I used the Red colour as a background which is a symbol of anger and fire. I used the transparent background and also set a blend mode to color dodge so that the effect only falls around the person. I applied
overlay blend mode on top of the screen outline layer.

Found

In this image, I have showed a path where a person founds a mobile phone on the way. I again used the transparent background by setting up at 800 x 600 pixels in dimension, RGB colour mode at 72 ppi mode. I also used brush tool to design some effects. I set up background image and fill out with RGB magenta. I used the Pen tool to create some curved lines and also set up spacing between lines.

Hidden

In this image, I was trying to show the hidden secrets of the universe. I am also a fan of Star trek movies. I usually watch them for their special effects. I came up with the idea to appear more like a ghost. I also put a galaxy like effect as we never got to know that what is hidden inside our universe. I tried each filter individually to know which looks good and fits into the style I want. I used the Filter menu and apply Filter>Render>Clouds on the background layer. Apply the Filter>Distort> Twirl and set up an angle of about 50o. Then I used the different Filter techniques and added layers. At last I used Bevel and Emboss tools for editing an image.

Joy

When we are happy, then we have a glow and different charm on the face. In this image, I used some awesome lighting and glow. I created a new file of size 800×600 px and fill the background layer with light blue. I selected the man by using Polygonal Lasso tool and do some adjustments until I get a nice result and delete background of the photo. I chose the filter menu and put some cloudy effect. Then I used the blending options and put some outer shine to create a light. By adding another layer, I decreased the opacity this time.
I add some sparkle trail to a photo by using different techniques such as color overlay etc. I created a new layer and choose the Gradient tool/ Radial Gradient.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed my image type assignment. I used some lighting and colours which makes my image much better. I turned the normal photo to different style. My first attempt was the photo of my face when I had chicken pox which was quite successful by removing the pimple from my face. I came across new things like how to use lighting how to use different layer styles, how to use different shades, colours. It’s fun to experiment and mess around the filters. I learn how to combine a few Blending Modes and colours mixed with shapes to fill the rest of the spaces and add to the image, giving a radical and abstract feel to some areas.
Whatever thoughts came to my mind during making, I tried to put them in my different type of images. I tried to give that feeling, that liveliness to my images which I felt during the making. I gave my best to give my thoughts to these images and learn how to visualize things.

Visual Communication-- Assignment Type

Typography is something; I am doing for the first time. When I started working on Photoshop, everything was new to me. I started practising with some silly typography images but the assignment is more than that silliness. It requires more time and concentration. The assignment is about creating four typography images in different patterns. So, for all images I used the transparent background layout. Each image is having dimension of 800×600 pixels and RGB colour mode at 72 ppi. I set black as a foreground colour for every image. I used 7th version of Photoshop for my typography images.

Fast Type Image:
In my first typography image, I described the word ‘Fast’. When the phrase fast comes in our mind we think of or we relate it to words like quick, rapid, speed and many more. Therefore, I wanted to make such a typography image which itself describes the word fast like an image in a speedy mode. So, I made a streaked image for fast which shows speedy motion. The way I started making my image is by adding layers and using the blending options. I tried different new styles but I was not able to get an eye catching image. I used advanced blending to fill opacity and also used blend clipped layers as Group and Transparency Shapes layer. Then I tried pattern overlay and set up scale to 39%. After that, I added another layer and use Bavel and Emboss effect with Gradient overlay. As given in the assignment, I added a black strip at the bottom of the image of 25 pixels high. Following that, I added a white text strip and set at Arial at 18px in the bottom right hand corner.

Slow Type Image:
For my second image, I described the type ‘Slow’. The first idea came to my mind to create something that looks like snail or a tortoise but I dropped that idea because I can’t use photos as I was working on typography. In this type of image I wanted to create a smoky or cloudy environment which gives a feeling of slowness. So, I chose a background having clouds indicating slow behaviour. This time I chose different blending options like inner shadow, outer glow, and satin which help in creating the look I wanted. I used all the three channels red, green and brown in my advanced blending. In next layers, I reduced the opacity to see how it looks like.

Tough Type Image:

As I started working on my next ‘Tough’ type of image, I wanted to use stuff like bricks, rope, wires which gives a sense of strong and secure feeling. So, I decided to use wires for my image to give a sturdy type of look. I used combination of red and blue as a background as a red is attractive eye catchy colour
and blue gives a feeling of strongest sometime friendly and sometimes shows steadfast behaviour. Altogether the mixture of both gives a strong contrast. I applied pattern overlay to give a wiry look. I was increasing or decreasing the percentage of opacity in different layers to give a better look. To make it look more aggressive, I added dark pinkish colour. Then I added the black strip and put my student number and type I am working on.

Weak Type Image:

The last type to work on was weak image that was totally opposite to rest of three images. In this image, I have to create an image which look a bit fragile, delicate, pathetic etc. I used this type of font to shows lackness in physical strength and firmness. I used the reflective surfaces to create nonfigurative images. I feel that the images using reflections have a more creative appeal. For the background colour, I set opacity to 15% and choose screen and linear light as blend modes in different layers style.

Conclusion:

First of all I enjoyed whatever I did. I came across new things like how to use blending options, what percentage of opacity looks good to your image, how to use different layer styles, how to use different shades, colours. As I told earlier Typography was a new thing for me and I started with basics. Whatever thoughts came to my mind during making, I tried to put them in my different type of images. I tried to give that feeling, that liveliness to my images which I felt during the making. I gave my best to give my thoughts to these images. There were confusing moments but it was interesting as each time I was learning more about
typography. It was a nice experience working with typography.

Deep Learning vs Surface Learning

Introduction:
As we know, Learning means acquiring knowledge, developing skills and collecting the information that can help in daily life. The learning depends mainly on effort and time spent in a particular field. There is lots of learning term but I will look on two terms “Deep” and “Surface” learning.
Deep Learning:
Deep learning is long term learning process and comes from understanding, previous knowledge and experience. Deep learning involves development, is self directed and lifelong.  Deep learning provides understanding and application for life. Deep learning make student interested in the course content.A good example of this is the skill of driving a cycle. If you do cycling and peddle it without thinking about what you have to do. But think back how difficult it was when you started learning to peddle. You had to learn how to co-ordinate hands, feet, eyes and paddle and watch the road all at the same time. But once I have learnt to drive and it becomes easy.
Surface Learning:
Surface learning is often short term memorising. Surface learning does not promote understanding or long term retention of knowledge and information. In Surface learning learners treat the course as unrelated bits of knowledge, memorizes the facts, find difficulty in making sense of new ideas presented and feel undue pressure and worry about work. I believe that if I understood some materials it would also then be in long term memory. Sometime remembering things doesn’t make any sense. I don’t remembering things. I believe that memorisation is not a study technique. When I understand the concept it is easy to memorize and leads to long term retention and is much more valued by the students.

One of the things I have learned in my studies in GCD is the importance of paying close attention to learning and understanding. Sometime I memorize the things however I am well aware that this does not lead to long term retention and I used to do these things in exam if I had not studied it before.  I wasn’t the deep learner, but I did have an attention to understand. We must learn how to learn, while responding to endlessly changing technologies and social, economic, and global condition. In future we need to take part in complex, meaningful projects that require sustained engagement and collaboration.

First let’s look at the definition of “deep” and “surface” learning. Deep learning has been found to be better in supporting flexible problem solving, reasoning skills, and generating accurate hypothesis and coherent explanations. It is based on the premise that children learn deeply when they create products that require understanding and application of knowledge. Deep learning improves lots of skills such as ability to solve complex problems, apply knowledge from one lesson to others. Deep learning has more significant impact on the student performance than any other variable, including student background and prior achievement. Students are most successful when they are taught how to learn as well as what to learn. Deep and surface learning are opposite end of the same axis. My actual learning experience as a student over the past one month’s confirms that I am deep learner. Although we may adopt different approaches in different situation. By using deep learning technique, I can earn high grades.
